Coastal Cleanup a big success

Franklin County’s coastline is a lot cleaner this week thanks to a few hundred volunteers and a lot of work. The annual Coastal Cleanup was held Saturday, September 19th – removing over ten thousand pounds of trash and debris from the local waterfront. Nearly 3000 pounds of trash was picked up from St. George Island alone – about the same amount was picked up from area along the Carrabelle river and near the Crooked River lighthouse. Eastpoint volunteers cleaned up nearly 1400 pounds of trash and 940 pounds came from 10 foot hole in Apalachicola. Of the 10,480 pounds of trash picked up, over 2000 pounds was recycled. Volunteers say they found all kinds of things washed up – including a number of tires and even a space heater.
