Crime rate up in Franklin County
Crime in Franklin County was up over 55 percent in the first 6 months of the year – the biggest increases were in the number of rapes and aggravated assaults. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement released its semi-annual crime report this week which shows the numbers and types of crimes committed between January and June of this year. There were 171 major crimes reported in Franklin County in the first 6 months of this year – that’s up from 110 over the same time period last year. The biggest increases were in the number of forcible rapes which rose from 0 to 5 and Aggravated assaults which rose from 11 last year to 23 in the first 6 months of this year. There were also 42 burglaries January through June, up from 25 last year and 95 larcenies, up from 64 last year. The number of motor vehicle thefts fell from 10 to 5. Police are solving more of the crimes that occur in the county. According to FDLE – 41 percent of cases in Franklin County this year are considered cleared – that’s up from about 33 percent over the same time last year. Gulf County saw a 24 and a half percent drop in crime numbers so far this year – Gulf County saw declines in the numbers of Burglaries, larcenies, forcible rapes and robberies – though they have seen the number of aggravated assaults increase from 44 to 46. Gulf County law enforcement has cleared close to 40 percent of its criminal cases so far this year – about the same as they did last year.
