Fight to protect raw oysters moves on-line

Oyster lovers are taking to the internet to stop a federal ban on raw oysters. There is now an on-line petition drive where people can show their opposition to the FDA plan – there is also a save our oysters facebook page where people can post comments in support of raw oysters. The web sites are the latest responses to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposal to ban the sale of raw oysters harvested for up to 7 months a year to help curb deaths from Vibrio vulnificus, a naturally occurring bacteria that affects people with weakened immune systems. About 15 people die from the bacteria each year. The ban would likely kill the Gulf Coast oyster industry as we know it and affect coastal communities from Florida to Texas.
