County commissioners this week asked that their attorney help the local animal control department get custody of two pit bulls that are believed to have been used as bait to train other pit bulls to fight. The two animals were rescued from a home on Bluff Road in Apalachicola in September – one of the dogs had over 70 puncture wounds across its face and body consistent with dog bites, the other had at least 30 puncture wounds along with various other injuries including split gums and lips. Animal control director Van Johnson said one of the dogs needs facial reconstructive surgery. Johnson also said that there are people who have offered to provide good homes for the dogs but the county can’t adopt them out until they take legal custody of the animals. The county commission agreed to have its attorney help animal control in getting custody through the courts. For people who have knowledge of dog fighting in Franklin County, there is a toll free animal cruelty tip line to report it. That number is 1.877.215.2250. Calls are confidential, and callers are eligible of rewards up to $5,000 for any notification that results in an arrest and conviction. The toll free animal cruelty tip line number again is 1.877.215.2250.
