Governor Crist seeks agricultural disaster declaration for Florida

Governor Charlie Crist is asking for a disaster declaration for the entire State of Florida due to extreme cold weather conditions earlier this month. The governor made the request last week to Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

The governor pointed out that over a period of 13 days, Florida saw some of the coldest temperatures ever recorded. The low temperatures did a tremendous amount of damage to agricultural products throughout the entire state. Crist said that no sector of agriculture appears to have been spared – some of the crops that sustained significant damage include citrus, sugarcane, nursery crops, tropical fish, sweet corn, tomatoes, blueberries, peppers and avocadoes.

Preliminary estimates are that all of Florida’s 67 counties will meet the threshold for a statewide agricultural disaster.
