NOAA fisheries seeks comment on longline fishery rule

NOAA fisheries is currently taking public input on a rule designed to protect sea turtles from the bottom longline fishery. The rule, which has been in effect on an interim basis since October prohibits the use of bottom longline gear in the reef fish fishery east of Cape San Blas from June through August.

It also reduces the number of bottom longline vessels allowed to fish in the Gulf and restricts the number of hooks that may be possessed onboard each reef fish bottom longline vessel to 1,000 hooks total, only 750 of which may be fished or rigged for fishing at any given time.

Written comments on the amendment must be received no later than March 1, 2010, to be considered by NOAA Fisheries Service.
