Franklin County Commissioners have agreed to make some changes to the county peddlers’ ordinance that they hope will keep unlicensed peddlers from setting up shop.
Beginning next year, peddlers will have to buy their county license by March the 1st – the cost of the license is 150 dollars. People who wait till after March the 1st or who are caught peddling without a license would be charged 750 dollars for the license.
The county also agreed to place a sign at the public beach parking area on St. George Island warning potential lawbreakers about the requirements and to request that the Franklin County sheriff’s office provide enhanced patrols of the public beach area to enforce the peddler’s ordinance.
The changes were made to help island businesses, many of which have complained in the past that peddlers take their customers without facing the same expenses that permanent businesses do. Businesses are especially concerned by peddlers who show up on weekends during the summer without a peddler’s license and then disappear again once the tourists have thinned out.
The proposal to change the peddlers’ ordinance passed on a 3 to 2 vote with commissioners Putnal and Sanders opposing the change.
