This report represents some events the FWC handled over the past week; however, it does not include all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement.
NORTHWEST REGION
OKALOOSA COUNTY
Officer Danny Arnette observed a subject trying to drive his vehicle out of a ditch along Old River Road. The subject was impaired and stated he had decided to leave a party early before he got too drunk to drive. An Okaloosa County Sheriff's Department traffic unit responded and placed the subject under arrest for driving under the influence after field sobriety tasks confirmed he was impaired.
Lt. Mark Hollinhead with Officers Van Barrow and Espy Letcher responded to a minor boating accident in Destin Harbor. A pontoon vessel struck a personal watercraft (PWC) while docking. No one was injured and the PWC sustained only minor damage.
Boaters flagged down Officers Van Barrow and Espy Letcher to report a subject involved in a diving incident in Destin Harbor. The officers determined the subject was received a laceration to his leg caused by the prop of a vessel when he dove from the vessel into the water. The officers transported the victim to the Destin U.S. Coast Guard Station where he was then transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
Officers Sulin Schafer, Pete Rockwell, Matt Webb, Ken White, Van Barrow, Alan Kirchinger, Espy Letcher, and Steve Bartlett worked the annual Emerald Coast Poker Run. Over 100 boats participated in the event, many capable of speeds near 100 miles per hour. The distance for the event spanned from Pensacola Beach to San Destin. Boating safety was the primary concern and officers worked to provide a safe boating experience for the participants and the public. During the event, officers performed 136 hours of vessel patrol, conducted 238 vessel inspections, checked 715 users, and issued five uniformed boating citations, 22 written boating safety warnings, and one resource warning. The officers worked three boating accidents, one with injury, and responded to seven calls for service.
Bay County
Officer David Erdman observed an individual feeding cigar minnows to dolphins near the east jetties of the Panama City pass. Officer Erdman observed the dolphins swim directly to the individual’s personal watercraft (PWC) while other personal watercraft were in the area. The individual noticed Officer Erdman and immediately entered the water as he approached. When the subject entered the water, the dolphins immediately swam around him. Officer Erdman picked the subject up from the water and transported him back to his PWC. Officer Erdman located cigar minnows in the vessel’s front hatch. Further investigation revealed the subject was a commercial tour guide. He admitted to entering the water with bait in his pockets to feed the dolphins because he got better tips from the people on the tour. Officer Erdman issued a citation to the subject and will forward it to federal prosecutors for filing.
Officer Mike Nobles recently had a court case involving a subject who failed to obtain a vessel title upon purchase of a vessel. The subject was found guilty, however, while in court produced a title for the vessel. Officer Nobles conducted a follow-up investigation by requesting a title search and found the “new” title had been obtained by fraudulent means. An arrest warrant was obtained for title fraud and the violator was arrested and booked into the Bay County Jail.
Officer Nick Price was driving home at the end of his shift when he noticed a vehicle ahead of him being operated in a careless manner. Officer Price stopped the vehicle and the operator exhibited signs of impairment. This was verified later when the operator was found to have a .225/.235 blood alcohol content (BAC). The operator was booked into the Bay County Jail for driving under the influence and his passenger was booked by the Panama City Police Department for disorderly intoxication.
Washington County
Officer Lane Kinney responded to a complaint regarding possession of an alligator. The officer found a Chipley resident in possession of a five-foot alligator being kept in the bathtub at the residence. Officer Kinney charged the individual for possession of an alligator and arrested him on warrants for passing worthless checks totaling $10,657.00 in Walton County. The subject was booked into Washington County Jail.
