FWC bans fox enclosures in Florida

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has approved a rule prohibiting the operation of fox and coyote enclosures around the state.
The commission has been working on the issue for about a year – and has had a temporary prohibition in effect since February.
The fox and coyote enclosures allowed hunting dogs to chase foxes and coyotes within a closed area.
The enclosures were supposed to provide places for the foxes and coyotes to hide from the dogs, but that has not always proved to be the case.
The move to end fox and coyote enclosures was supported by many people who called the practice cruel but was also opposed by people who called the practice a "valued family tradition".
Franklin County commissioners earlier this year issued a resolution supporting the practice.
Now that the practice has been banned there is the question of what to do with the remaining foxes and coyotes.
Some of the red foxes and coyotes might be kept as pets, which is legal with the appropriate permits.
Others will be transferred to wildlife rehabilitation facilities or euthanized.
