Franklin County begins expanded recycling program

Franklin County’s expanded recycling program will take effect this weekend.
Franklin County’s solid waste department has teamed up with brewer Anheuser-Busch to place and maintain 20 recycle bins at all public walkovers and other popular points of entry to the beaches on St. George Island.
The bins are blue in color and clearly marked to recycle plastic or aluminum.
The new recycling program was spurred on by an Anheuser-Busch initiative for all employees to engage with their community on special programs.
Anheuser-Busch district manager Josh Whitfield said “This will give beachgoers an easy and environmentally smart option to dispose of their trash as they make their way off the beach.  We hope that everyone will look for and take advantage of these new receptacles.”
Franklin County began a volunteer recycling drop-off program throughout the county in 1992, and has seen the annual participation rate fluctuate between 10 – 13 percent.
Last year the county disposed of 23,433 tons of municipal solid waste and recycled just 11 percent.
County solid waste director Van Johnson said “By adding beach recycling we’re looking at increasing our numbers plus keeping St. George Island clean, which is home to one of the top ten beaches in America.   If all goes well, we’ll expand the service to beaches in Alligator Point and Carrabelle.”
