MEDIA ADVISORY #2: Date June 30, 2011

APALACHICOLA—A second briefing, or status update as to the progress of power restoration utilizing generators, was conducted with a representative of Progress Energy Florida at 3:00 PM on June 29, 2011.

The island has been segmented into five sections for generator placement. Progress in all sectors is moving along steadily, with the commercial section progressing more slowly due to its complexity. It is anticipated that all sections will be functional by late evening today or early on June 30, 2011. Before the lines are placed back in service a complete re-inspection and damage assessment of the entire crossing will be conducted.

We are asking all residents and businesses to MINIMIZE as much as possible their usage of electricity during this time of generator supplied power.

Equipment is being moved into place to replace the damaged towers, and it is anticipated that these will be in place and operational during the weekend. They are asking that all boaters observe a 300 foot buffer zone around the construction site while this work is in progress.

We were stuck in that mess and left the island after 36 hours of 90 degree heat. What a bummer way for a vacation to end. I hope they can do better in the future with backup power. We were told by the power company that power would be up by midnight, Tuesday. By Wednesday morning we had enough and went to PCB.

We were without power from Monday at 7:57p.m til Wed night around 11p.m...wasted all of our meats that we took....saved all year for this vacation..spent $2700 to rent a house there..was absolutely miserable and everyday and every few hours were told lies to by either suncoast realty personal or plantation guard shacks...every time we asked it was only going to be a couple more hours...it was horrible...been going to St George for 18 years...this year was the last one.
