Fireworks Will Be Allowed To Light Up The Franklin County Skies This Weekend Sufficient rain over the past week has prompted Franklin County Emergency Officials to lift the countywide burn ban in Franklin County. That means commercial fireworks displays scheduled for St. George Island and Carrabelle will be allowed to launch as planned. Visitors and residents are cautioned that the area is still dry and that extreme caution should be exercised during any grilling or personal fireworks use. Full restoration of power to St. George Island is expected by the end of the weekend, according to Progress Energy officials who are in the process of replacing power poles damaged by storm winds earlier in the week. In the meantime, the utility company has placed several large generators on the island to provide limited power to residents and visitors. Until full power is restored, residents and visitors are asked to minimize their use of power as much as possible and boaters are asked to observe a 300 foot buffer zone around the construction site in the bay where the damaged poles are being replaced. Looking for a last minute place to stay this weekend? Lodging providers report that there are a few vacancies still remaining for Friday and Saturday nights.
