Small portion of SGI fishing pier should re-open Friday; project completion not expected until mid-August

Fishermen will be able to use a small portion of the St. George Island fishing pier beginning this weekend.

County Director of Administrative Services Alan Pierce said about 100 feet of the pier would be open to the public beginning Friday.

The pier has been barricaded off for over a month while repair work is done to the structure.

The pier was damaged last June during Tropical Storm Debby when it was hit by a barge leaving a 165 foot gap that makes it impossible for people to access much of the pier.

A company called The Gulf Group is currently replacing the missing section of bridge with a 16 foot wide timber pier held up by concrete piles.

It is now believed that work will be finished in mid-August so that the entire pier can be reopened to the public.

The work was supposed to be complete by June 30th, and under the current contract the company will lose 300 dollars a day for every day past June 30th the work is incomplete.
