County Commission asks local hospital to investigate employee benefit package

Franklin County commissioners have asked Weems memorial Hospital to begin looking at ways to provide benefits to its employees.

The hospital currently employs about 110 people full and part time.

Commissioners expressed concerns that the hospital is losing good workers because it does not provide retirement or other benefits to its workers.

Hospital CEO Ray Brownsworth said the hospital would love to provide benefits, but just can’t afford to do so at this time.

Mister Brownsworth said it would require making the hospital more robust and increasing cash flow for benefits to become a reality.

Commissioner Smokey Parrish added that the county and the hospital have worked hard over many years just to make it so the hospital can support itself and they have to be careful not to over-extend so the hospital can’t pay its own bills.

Commissioners say they realize that providing employee benefits is a long-term proposal, but the planning has to start now.

They asked that the idea be brought to the hospital advisory board so it can begin looking at various scenarios
