Sheriff asks county commission to consider leasing vehicles

Franklin County sheriff Mike Mock has asked that the county commission consider a lease program so the sheriff’s department can get some new vehicles.

Sheriff Mock said his department is in desperate need of vehicles, he has some on the road that are over 10 years old and many that are in the 8 to 9 year range.

The sheriff pointed out that the county went a number of years without purchasing any new vehicles for the sheriff’s department and now the department is staring to feel the impacts of that.

The sheriff has asked that the county consider a three-year lease option that would allow the sheriff’s department to get either 6 or 8 new vehicles as early as the next budget year.

Leasing 6 vehicles would cost about 50 thousand dollars a year, 8 would be 67 thousand and the sheriff’s department would be able to buy the vehicles for a dollar each at the end of the lease.

The downside is that the program would cost a little more over the three years than buying the vehicles outright, the upside is that the county would be able to spread the costs out so it wouldn't be such a big hit all at once.

County Commissioners said they will have the county finance department look at the proposal more closely before making a final decision.
