County
commissioners have agreed to extend a contract with Florida Probation Services.
The company has handled local misdemeanor probation services since 2011.
They
collect payments from people on probation and monitor community service hours.
Their
contract with the county ends on March 16th.
By law the county has to provide the service.
The new contract is for three years, though the county has the right
to end the contract with 90 days notice.
The
contract extension was recommended by County Judge van Russell and the county’s
attorney.
The action was taken even though
a former company employee has pleaded no contest to pocketing possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars in Franklin County
probation payments over a period of about 5 years.
The
company has agreed to have an external audit done every year to make sure that
doesn’t happen again.
They said
an external audit is required in Bay County where they also work, and they have
no problem providing one here too.
