The
non-profit group Florida Taxwatch has released its annual list of what they
call budget turkeys.
Normally the list is released
before the budget is signed into law, but this year it’s coming out a little
late.
The group found 189 projects totaling
about 167 million dollars in projects that they said did not go through the
proper procedures for funding.
Many of the items on the turkey
list are projects that lawmakers inserted into the budget late in the session.
One Franklin County project made
the Turkey list, which was 250 thousand dollars for renovations to the old
Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve building at Scipio Creek.
That facility will one day house
the Franklin County Extension Office.
The project was funded in the
final budget.
Two Wakulla County projects are
also on the Turkey list, and both were vetoed by Governor Rick Scott before he
signed the budget.
Those were 250 thousand dollars
for the restoration of the St. Marks Lighthouse and 1.2 million dollars for
land for the Wakulla Environmental Institute.
