Federal Government will assess the Apalachicola Kingsnake for possible endangered listing

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is taking a closer look at a local snake species to see if it should be protected under the Endangered Species Act.
The Apalachicola Kingsnake is one of 10 species that will be assessed as to whether they may require federal
protection.
The Apalachicola Kingsnake is not poisonous and eats frogs, birds and other snakes, even  rattlesnakes, and is immune to their venom.
It is only found in the Eastern Apalachicola Lowlands in the panhandle between the Apalachicola and Ochlockonee rivers and south of Telogia Creek in Franklin and Liberty counties.
It is not found outside of Florida.

Other species that are being considered for federal protection include the alligator snapping turtle and the southern hog nosed snake which are also found in our area.
