Franklin county Commissioners
last week approved a consent agreement that will allow the Franklin County
Tourist Development Council to provide 250 thousand dollars toward the
construction of a new World War 2 museum at Carrabelle beach.
The Camp Gordon Johnston World
War 2 Museum plans to build a nearly 4000 square foot museum on a lot it owns across
the street from Carrabelle Beach.
The total construction cost will
be a little over 371 thousand dollars.
The museum has been trying for
year to get state funding for the project, but the funding has not been
forthcoming so the county decided to use tourist dollars to help cover the
costs.
Once the new building is
complete, the museum can move from its location at the Carrabelle Municipal
complex.
County Attorney Michael Shuler
said this is the county’s first foray into providing TDC funds for the
construction of a capital expense.
