Night at the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab Aquarium: Longnose Gar

Night at the Aquarium:
Longnose Gar Fish
Night at the Aquarium: Longnose Gar
Welcome to Night at the Aquarium! Come night diving with us in our tanks and sea some of our nocturnal animals in a different light! Nocturnal animals are animals that are more active at night and have developed special senses to hear, smell or see at night. In the ocean, some marine animals have even developed special abilities like bio-luminescence that allow them to glow in the dark! We will be posting weekly "Night at the Aquarium" videos where we shine a spotlight on some of these very special animals.

This week we are featuring the infamous Longnose Gar. If an alligator and a fish had a baby, this would be it! Gar fish are nocturnal ambush predators that are active and hunt at night. They are notoriously known for their tough skin and amazing ability to survive in the harshest of conditions. Their diamond-shaped scales are so thick and strong, they have even been used by Native Americans to make arrowheads. If you ever encounter one while fishing, beware! They have very sharp, needle-like teeth and are not afraid to bite!

Sincerely,
