The
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has decided to
cancel its Scallop Sitter program for the 2020 summer season.
They
are taking the step to protect its volunteers from the spread of
COVID-19.
The
scallop sitter program was started in 2016 as part of a 10-year
project to restore bay scallops in Florida’s Panhandle.
Volunteers
were able to help by maintaining cages of scallops from July through
January which would then be placed back into the bays to help the
natural scallop population.
The
FWC said it wants to thank all of the volunteers that signed up for
this year’s event and hope to continue the Scallop Sitter program
next year.
