Franklin County Commissioners are expressing concern over proposed reductions in the Department of Corrections upcoming state budget that could result in the closing of at least 4 prisons statewide.

There have been no specific prisons listed for closure, but commissioners say it is critical for Franklin County that the state prison in Carrabelle stay open.

The state prison in Carrabelle opened in 2005, so it is one of the newer facilities in the state, which means it has some of the lower maintenance costs.

But it is also chronically understaffed.

County commissioners pointed out that the prison has provided a much needed workforce for the county, as prison labor is used for a number of jobs including roadside cleaning and park maintenance.

The prison has also provided much needed employment for local people, particularly those put out of work by the bay closure.

Commissioners said even if the prison closures are approved, it will likely be September before a final list of closures is released.

The warden of the prison in Carrabelle is expected to attend next week's county commission meeting, to discuss inmate labor and proposed prison closings.
