DEP wants public input on Florida Forever projects

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the state’s Acquisition and Restoration Council is changing the way Florida purchases land through the Florida Forever Program.

For the past 10 years, land that the state was interested in purchasing for conservation was ranked in either “A” or “B” priority groups and was purchased when the money became available. Now the state says it wants more public input into the purchases and is seeking public testimony on which land purchases are most important.

There are currently 100 projects being considered including a few in our area. Those include the Pierce Mound Complex, land along Dickerson Bay at Bald Point in Franklin County, St. Joe Timberland in 11 counties including Franklin County, and The Upper St. Marks River Corridor in Wakulla County.

Two public hearings have been scheduled to provide the public with the opportunity to educate the eleven Acquisition and Restoration Council members on each of the projects on the Florida Forever priority list. The closest to our area will be held in Tallahassee this Friday, April 16th.

All comments received before June 1, 2010 will be made available to the ARC members to be considered before they make their rankings this July.
