Florida recieves federal money to protect endangered species on the coast

Florida will share in nearly $66 million in federal grants to help protect and conserve the habitat of threatened and endangered species. The grants, awarded through the Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund, will benefit numerous species in 25 states ranging from the desert tortoise to the Indiana bat.

Florida will receive nearly 1 million dollars to continue the creation of a habitat conservation plan for Florida beaches. The 4 year old program includes 35 coastal counties and looks at activities in the coastal area and their threats to threatened and endangered species. The goal of the habitat conservation plan is to allow ongoing beach structure protection measures while mitigating the adverse effects to nesting sea turtles, beach mice, and shorebirds.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is leading the effort in conjunction with builders groups, municipalities, and others.
