Florida was one of 33 states to receive federal money to permanently protect private forestland through the Forest Legacy Program.
The Forest Legacy Program works directly with states to protect privately-owned forests from development. The program promotes voluntary land conservation through the principle of "willing buyer, willing seller." Lands in the program are protected through conservation easements, which allow landowners to retain ownership, or through property acquisition by states.
The purpose is to protect working forests in states around the country that are in danger of becoming fragmented or disappearing altogether.
This year’s Forest Legacy Program awards totaled nearly 72 million dollars – of that Florida will get 2 and a half million dollars to protect property reaching from St. Vincent Sound in Franklin County to Lake Wimico in Gulf county.
