The rate of serious crimes in Franklin County was up nearly 60 percent in 2009, but state officials say law enforcement solved more cases.
The overall crime rate in Franklin County, which includes violent crimes like Murder and rape, was up from 204 incidents in 2008 to 326 last year. There were no murders in Franklin County in 2008 or 2009. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said the number of forcible rapes, however, increased from 1 to 6, the number of robberies rose from 0 to 2 and the number of aggravated assaults more than doubled from 29 to 68. The number of burglaries also rose from 46 to 79. There were 163 larcenies last year, up from 112 in 2008. Motor vehicle thefts was the only area where crime numbers fell from 16 in 2008 to 8 last year.
FDLE reports that 46 percent of the violent crime cases have been cleared by local law enforcement authorities. That’s up from about 40 percent in 2008.
Gulf County saw a 15 percent drop in the number of major crimes last year. Gulf county had one murder last year; Robberies fell from 2 to 1, and aggravated assaults were up from 69 to 73. There were 47 burglaries in Gulf County last year, 114 larcenies and 10 motor vehicle thefts.
Gulf County police cleared 39 percent of their cases last year, about the same as in 2008.
