Franklin County may be facing a shortage of doctors soon.
Weems Memorial Hospital Administrator Chuck Colvert told county commissioners this week that there is a problem growing in the county that a number of local doctors are leaving or cutting hours but there aren’t any new ones moving in.
Mister Colvert pointed out that Dr. Lionel Caitlin recently left the federally funded Eastpoint medical Clinic in Eastpoint. The hospital has been trying to hire him but might not be able to because of a non-compete contract the doctor signed with the medical clinic.
Doctor Nancy Chorba, who has been providing services in Carrabelle, is also planning to leave the area soon, and local cardiologist Dr. Sanaullah, has cut his hours back to two days a week because he is now offering medical services in other counties too.
County commissioners say they will try to help solve the potential doctor shortage before it becomes a real problem and they will start be contacting our federal representatives to ask them to put pressure on the medical clinic to allow Dr. Caitlin to continue working in Franklin County.
