Franklin County commissioners are patting themselves on the back after a twenty thousand dollar investment they made last year has blossomed into a half million dollar energy efficiency grant for the county and the city of Carrabelle.
The county last year spent 20 thousand dollars to hire a lobbying firm called Governance Services to try and get its share of more than 12 billion dollars in federal economic stimulus money that came to Florida. The county commission learned this week that the county will receive a half million dollar Energy Efficiency and Conservation grant that that will provide money for the county courthouse and the Carrabelle City Complex.
That money will fund an energy audit at the Franklin County Courthouse and the Carrabelle City Complex and will also pay for new windows in the two buildings. The grant will also fund the installation of solar panels on the courthouse annex which could save the county an additional 23 thousand dollars a year.
And there is the possibility that there is more money on the way; Governance is working with the Alligator Point Fire Department on a grant to help pay for a new fire station.
