Franklin County's school buses are now cleaner

School buses in Franklin County as well as nine other rural north Florida counties are now a little friendlier to the environment.

The Franklin County school system recently took part in a federal grant project to retrofit school buses in rural school districts to reduce diesel emissions. As a result of the project, buses built before 2003 were retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts, which reduce harmful pollutants in tailpipe emissions. The devices will reduce children's exposure to diesel exhaust and reduce the air pollution from diesel school buses by approximately 50 percent.

The grant allowed 199 buses to be retrofitted in 10 rural school districts including: Franklin, Gulf, Liberty and Wakulla Counties.

The $250,000 grant was awarded from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and distributed through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
