This week is National work zone awareness week – a time drivers are urged to drive more safely in areas where road workers are present.
The importance of work zone safety became more obvious a few years ago after a road worker was killed in Franklin County while directing traffic on Highway 98 between Eastpoint and Carrabelle.
In 2008, the most recent statistics available, 93 people were killed and over 6800 people were injured in Florida work zones. 2008 was the first year since 2003 that the number of annual deaths has dropped below 100.
The Highway patrol says the top 4 causes of accidents in work zones are careless driving, failing to yield the right of way, improper lane changes and following too closely.
And if the safety aspect doesn’t affect you- then maybe the financial aspect will. In Florida, traffic fines are doubled if you are caught violating traffic laws in road work zones.
