Tyndall Air Force Base retiring some planes

Tyndall Air Force Base says it will soon be retiring some of its older aircraft.

The base said it is moving forward with the Air Force directed Combat Air Forces reduction initiative that divests 48 F-15 aircraft currently assigned to the 325th Fighter Wing. Under the plan, Tyndall and 16 other Air Force locations will accelerate the retirement of approximately 259 aircraft including 112 F-15s, 138 F-16s and 9 A-10s this year.

Currently Tyndall aircraft are scheduled to relocate to bases in Oregon, Texas, Arizona and California – the first two F-15s left Tyndall on April 9th.

The air force expects to see a cost savings of $355 million this year and $3.5 billion dollars over the next five years. Because there will be fewer planes at Tyndall, there will also be fewer workers. 325th Fighter Wing officials anticipate a loss of approximately 800 positions over the next two years.
