5th, 6th and 7th graders face off in public speaking contest

8 local elementary school students faced off Tuesday morning in the annual 4-H/ Tropicana public speaking contest.

The students, who represented both of Franklin County’s public elementary schools, were asked to give a speech between 2 and 3 minutes long, which were then rated by a panel of 5 judges.

This year's winner in the 6th grade division was Amber Henning from the Apalachicola Bay Charter School who spoke about moving from elementary to middle school. The winner in the 4th and 5th grade division was Abigail Harris, from the Franklin County School who talked about cancer walks and the dangers of smoking.

All the contestants got plaques – the winners get scholarships to 4-H camp this summer.

Other topics included "the US Economy", "protecting the bay", "how Disney world rocks", "the end of the world in 2012", “Understanding me” and “Football.”
