County mulls contract to house state prisoners

County commissioners are considering a one year renewal on the contract that allows them to house state prisoners at the county jail.

The contract allows the state to pay the county about 400 thousand dollars a year to house 40 state prisoners at the local jail. The money goes into the county's fine and forfeiture fund and helps fund expenses at the sheriff's department and in the local court system.

Franklin County has been involved in the contract for about 15 years.

The contract is renewed annually – the commission has until June the 7th to decide whether to renew it again. That decision will be based in large part on a cost benefit analysis requested by county commissioner Pinki Jackel to see if the county is actually making money from the deal or spending more money than it brings in.
