Margaret is a beautiful, gentle and very sweet Redbone Coonhound. People often ask us what kind of dog makes a good family pet and we always say hounds. They tend to be loving and easy going companions, happy to be close by your side wherever you are (unless they catch a scent they can't resist!). If you are considering adopting a family pet, remember: Hounds aren't just for hunting anymore!
We are always looking for people willing to bring one of our animals into their home to be fostered for various needs.
Any time you can spare would be greatly appreciated.
Call Karen at 670-8417 for more details or visit the Franklin County Humane Society at 244 State Road 65 in Eastpoint. You may logon to the website at www.forgottenpets.org to see more of our adoptable pets.
Franklin County commissioners have agreed to declare the work needed at Womack Creek an emergency so they can get repairs done there as soon as possible.
Womack Creek is in the Tate's hall State Forest, and the problem is the stone headwall allowing people to drive over the creek has separated on the west side and is now leaning toward the water.
The county's engineers said driving some temporary sheetpiles might provide a short term fix, though they will consider other options too.
Franklin County has signed an agreement with the Department of Transportation to fully repair the headwall including building new headwalls, cleaning and repairs the arch corrugated metal pipes, and adding barrier walls to replace the guardrails over the culvert.
The problem is that money won't be available until next year and the repairs need to be done now.
By declaring the repairs an emergency, the county is able to bypass the required bid policy and hire someone quickly.
They have also approved spending up to 25 thousand dollars on the repairs.
Highly pathogenic Eurasian H5 avian influenza (HPAI) was detected Jan. 22 in two wild blue-winged teal harvested by hunters in Palm Beach County. HPAI is a virus that can occur in wild aquatic birds and can infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species. The risk to the general public from HPAI H5 infections is low; no human infections with Eurasian H5 viruses have occurred in the United States. This type of virus can pose a risk to wild and domestic bird populations.
Because wild birds can be infected with this virus and not appear sick, we recommend people minimize direct contact with wild birds by using gloves. If contact occurs, wash your hands with soap and water, and change clothing before having any contact with healthy domestic poultry and birds. Hunters are advised to field dress game birds in the field whenever possible and practice good biosecurity to prevent any potential disease spread. Learn more about precautions hunters should take to reduce the risk of spreading HPAI.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is continuing to monitor for HPAI in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and other partners. We ask everyone to assist this effort by reporting all sightings of birds found sick or dead of unknown causes to the bird mortality database.
