“The Florida Highway Patrol puts additional troopers on the roadways when we know more people will be traveling,” said Czernis. “The additional troopers on patrol enhances our ability to deter motorists from unsafe driving and better positions us to catch more of those who disregard the law, putting everyone they share the road with in danger.”

The Florida Highway Patrol provided assistance to more than 3,000 motorists on Florida’s roadways during the holiday weekend. Troopers made 80 arrests for Driving Under the Influence of alcohol or drugs and cited more than 5,000 drivers for speeding and more than 1,500 for failure to buckle up, with more than 14,000 citations issued overall. The Patrol also reported 17 traffic fatalities. Of the 1,304 crashes that FHP worked, 78 involved alcohol.

In addition to FHP’s heightened enforcement surrounding Labor Day, the Patrol also participated in Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. The nationwide enforcement campaign commenced Aug. 20 and continued through Labor Day. During the 18-day period, Florida troopers made 431 DUI arrests.
