Thanks to the extension on the sale of oyster harvesting licenses this year – the Department of Agriculture managed to sell nearly 1900 of the licenses.
Under normal circumstances, licenses for the fiscal year that begins July 1st have to be obtained between May 17 and June 30 or applicants face a $500 late fee.
This year, that deadline was extended to August 31st because of the Deepwater Horizon oil gusher.
The state had already sold 1663 oyster harvesting licenses before the extension which was a record number of sales.
About 16 percent of those were first time oyster licenses.
During the 2 month extension the state sold another 218 licenses for a grand total of 1881.
That includes 79 licenses sold in July and 139 sold in August.
This year’s sales were well above the previous record of 1409 licenses sold last year.
1996 holds the record for the least number of licenses sold with 630.
The state has license sale numbers dating back to 1989 and says that on average they sell just over 800 licenses a year.
