September Seafood Days promotion a HUGE success

The Tourist Development Council says their September Seafood Days promotion has proved to be more successful than they ever could have hoped and on Tuesday the group had to get permission to spend a little extra money on the program.

The September Seafood Days promotion lured visitors to Franklin County by offering VISA gift cards to visitors who spend at least two nights in the county during September.

The hope was that the visitors would take the cards and spend the money at local merchants.

TDC president Helen Spohrer said the council expected to distribute 4500 of the 50 dollar gift cards through the month – instead those cards were used almost immediately so the TDC had to get permission from the county commission to purchase 2200 more.

Those additional cards will be purchased with money the TDC had left over from a seafood promotion this year.

The Tourist Development Council also said that because of some strong advertising efforts this Summer that Franklin County fared well during the tourist season despite the BP oil gusher.

At the beginning of the summer they believed tourism to Franklin County would have been down at least 30 percent but thanks to nearly 800 thousand dollars in advertising money from BP, and some hard work by the Tourist Development Council members, Franklin County actually had a strong summer.
