Florida tourism up in third quarter

Tourism was up in Florida during the third quarter of the year.
Preliminary estimates released by VISIT FLORIDA show an estimated 18.9 million travelers visited the Sunshine State between July and September.
That’s a .6 percent increase from the same period in 2009.
Tourism officials said they were pleased with the numbers because of the significant challenges stemming from the Gulf oil spill and a down economy.
Tourism numbers show that the number of overseas visitors to Florida increased by 17.4 percent and Canadian visitors increased by 23 percent over 2009.
The number of visitors from other US States, however, fell by 1.6 percent.
The increase in tourism was good for airports and hotels.
Total enplanements at Florida’s 14 major airports rose by 3.8 percent, and monthly hotel occupancy rates were up 5.1 percent.
