The first public meeting in Florida on the Natural Resource Damage Assessment process will be held this evening in Fort Walton Beach.
The program, which is called NERDA for short is designed to restore the natural resources of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The goals of the NRDA are to evaluate the impacts of the oil spill and develop the best strategies to bring the Gulf back to the condition the Gulf would have been in if the oil spill never happened.
The NRDA process will evaluate potential impacts to plants, marine life and their habitats, as well as beaches and wetlands. It will also evaluate potential impacts of the oil spill on tourism. The public is being asked to take part in the process by providing ideas on how BP and its federal partners can help restore the Gulf.
The first public meeting will be held at the Emerald Coast Conference Center in Fort Walton Beach from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m today. For people who can’t make the meeting there is a website that provides some of the specifics about the program.
