WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Steve Southerland, II participated today in a congressional field hearing listening directly to the coastal communities and small businesses hit hardest by last year’s Gulf oil spill tragedy. The field hearing, titled “Gulf of Mexico: A Focus on Community Recovery and New Response Technology,” was hosted in Houma, Louisiana.
“Florida’s Second Congressional District felt the crippling impact of last year’s Gulf oil spill – both economically and environmentally,” said Southerland. “As we approach the one-year anniversary of the tragedy this week, it is time to get our coastal communities back to work. I look forward to taking the information gathered during today’s hearing back home with me as we fight to accelerate North and Northwest Florida’s economic recovery and protect our natural resources from potential accidents in the future.”
Southerland was joined at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center by House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings and Louisiana congressmen Jeff Landry, John Fleming and Charles Boustany. Panelists included Gulf Coast business owners whose industries were directly impacted by the Deepwater Horizon spill.
