Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department wins SGI Chili Cook-off

In another sign that God loves the chili cook-off, there were blues skies over SGI while the rest of the country suffered through heavy rains and tornadoes. And while the crowds were smaller this year because of poor weather reports - the energy was high. I think most people were expecting a downpour and when it didn't happen they partied!

This was the 30th year of the cook-off and the 1st time that a local group won the contest. The AVFD will be heading to Las Vegas later this year to compete for 100K in the international chili cookoff. There were 43 contestants in the cook-off this year. We should have an earnings report soon.

Franklin County Health Department celebrating National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month
“Get Your Plate in Shape”

Tallahassee- The Franklin County Health Department is celebrating National Nutrition Month and Registered Dietitian Day on March 14th. Each March, The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) encourages Americans to return to the basics of healthy eating by eating the recommended amounts of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods and dairy each day. This years theme, “Get Your Plate in Shape”, helps consumers understand how to implement these suggestions into their daily lives.

By focusing this year’s theme on the new MyPlate, we can help people make the simple changes to their diet that will benefit them for a lifetime. USDA’s MyPlate replaced MyPyramid as the government’s primary food group symbol as an easy-to-understand visual/cue to help consumers adopt healthy eating habits consistent with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines. Dividing the plate into four sections: fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins, as well as a glass representing dairy products, it shows how you can incorporate the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines into every meal.

For more information on how to “Get Your Plate in Shape”, call the WIC Office (Women, Infants, and Children Program) at the Leon County Health Department at 850-606-8300 or 1-800-416-4123 and ask to speak to a nutritionist. You may also visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) at www.eatright.org.

FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION LAUNCHES COLLABORATIVE ONLINE COMMUNITY FOR TEACHERS

TALLAHASSEE – Florida's teachers have a new way to communicate and collaborate with other teachers across the state through a private social network called the “Florida Teacher Community.”  The Florida Department of Education, in partnership with Novachi, today launched a new, easy-to-use tool developed specifically for Florida's teachers. Kelly Seay, Teacher Liaison at the Florida Department of Education, will manage the communication and collaboration interface. Novachi will provide hosting and technical support.

“Communication with teachers is incredibly important in Florida and I am delighted that our educators will have additional tools and resources available to them,” said Florida Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson. “This will provide our teachers with another medium to collaborate and share ideas to boost student achievement, and ultimately, Florida’s education system.”

The Florida Teacher Community integrates Novachi's industry-leading Integrated Education System with the Ning social platform, the world's leading platform for custom private social websites, to provide Florida teachers with the means to collaborate and host discussions on various aspects of their profession. Teachers will be able to work together to establish best practices, communicate about what works in the classroom, share solutions or suggestions for changes to support Florida’s students, and help shape education policies and practice. The private online community features blogging, forum and group discussion, as well as photo and video sharing capability.

In addition to the social community, teachers will have access to a variety of educational resources to support daily teaching responsibilities. As other tools and resources prove to be useful for teachers, they will be added to the Novachi Apps launchpad. The Florida Teacher Community is private for teachers; however, the resource applications on the platform can be shared with parents and students to enhance collaboration beyond the classroom.

Each teacher will soon receive an email directly from Novachi Support with account access information allowing them to sign on to the Florida Teacher Community.  For more information, visit http://www.fldoe.org/JustForTeachers/.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Shoot
Whew, the past two weeks have been a blur.  Trying to get a grasp of the enormity of the exposure (pun intended) of SI Swimsuit issue has been a challenge.  This was an extraordinary project that places Franklin County in the context of world class vacation destination and will benefit us for many years to come. Coverage is not just in the pages in the magazine, which includes fifteen photographs plus a page on the Coombs House Inn and the area, a listing in the Where to Buy section and the Table of Contents.  This issue, the most viewed magazine in the world, is only a small part of the actual coverage.  The Sports Illustrated website also has three videosof the three models- Kate Upton, Ariel Meredith and Julie Henderson, describing the beauty of the area, plus sixty photographs. The videos in from the 2011 shoot garnered 103 million views.
And then there is the associated publicity surrounding the release of the issue which is enormous. The release on February 14th,  made every major news and talk show on television, including the David Letterman Show where Kate Upton actually said “Apalachicola”.  Just to give you an idea, in 2011, the SI Swimsuit issue garnered 62 million print impressions, 158 feature stories, 590 million television views, 1,200 reports, 2,700 online stories with an audience of 686.7 million unique readers, 29.7 million radio listeners on 51 stations and overall more than 2.6 billion media impressions in the 3 weeks surrounding the 2011 launch.
The first article to hit the stands was about us!  Friday, February 10th, USA Today Life/Weekend Section had a full article about the shoot that took place here.  USA Today has 3.2 million readers and 23,694,000 readers onusatoday.com. We enjoyed the solo spotlight for 5 days prior to the release of the magazine.

On Tuesday morning when the issue was released there was a flood tide of articles, blogs and mentions of Apalachicola and St George Island. It was talked about on the Good Morning America, the Today Show, Ellen, CBS News, ABC News, plus many local affiliated stations from Denver, Detroit to Arizona. Articles appeared in newspapers from New York, Washington DC , Miami, Atlanta, Vancouver, Canada, Europe, and articles in the Nigerian Times, the Hindustan Times, and the Cairns (Australia) Times.  I have not even mentioned the Tweets and Facebook messages. Kate Upton alone has 205,729 followers.
