FHSAA rescinds decision to shorten sports seasons
The Florida High School Athletic Association has decided to leave high school sports schedules alone next year. The group had voted earlier this year to cut the number of varsity games by 20 percent and the number of junior varsity games by 40 percent through the 2010-11 school year to save money. The decision would have affected all high school sports but football. The FHSAA took the action to save money for cash strapped school districts around Florida. The fact that football was spared, however, upset some parents who argued the decision violated Title IX, the federal law requiring schools to offer equal athletic opportunities to men and women. On Wednesday the FHSAA rescinded the decision and decided that all teams will play their full schedules next year. The decision was 15-0 to rescind the cuts after about an hour of discussion.
