Fires on local beaches are legal but troublesome

Franklin County commissioners are taking a look at the ordinance that regulates campfires at local beaches to see if it can be tightened up in any way.

People are allowed to build fires on local beaches – the ordinance actually covers what materials can be legally used to build a fire. Materials that are banned include household debris like glass and plastic as well as wood with nails in it.

The ordinance was created as a matter of public safety because many of the banned items don’t burn and stay on the beach where they are covered with sand where they can injure someone.

St. George Island fire chief Jay Abbott said that over the past week there have been two calls dealing with campfires made from bad material. He said he thinks the problem could be addressed with stronger enforcement by local police.

Chief Abbott said the county should not want to ban the fires, but just control what people are burning.
