NOAA Fisheries Service is seeking public comment on a proposed rule that would increase the commercial and recreational quotas of red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico.
A recent red snapper assessment showed that overfishing of the species likely ended in 2009, so the fisheries service is considering increasing the total allowable catch from the existing 5 million pounds to nearly 7 million pounds. The proposed rule would allow commercial fishermen to harvest 3.5 million pounds of red snapper a year and recreational fishermen 3.4 million pounds.
The recreational red snapper season opens on June the 1st, and under the increased quota would likely close on July the 24th, though the closing date is subject to change.
Fishermen who would like to comment on the proposed rule have until April 14th to do so.
