Franklin County commissioners voted Friday to extend the local state of emergency they first declared after the Deepwater oil spill began in late April. The local state of emergency makes Franklin County eligible for more state and federal assistance in preparing for the oil spill. The local state of emergency declaration has to be renewed every 7 days while the oil spill is a threat to our beaches.
Franklin County is also under a state of emergency issued by Governor Charlie Crist which actually supercedes the local state of emergency declaration.
The County Commission on Friday also agreed to give county commission chairman Smokey Parrish the power to make unilateral decisions if necessary if the oil spill should threaten local beaches and waterways. The board took the step to insure that someone could make necessary decisions at any time of the day without requiring a county commission meeting. Mister Parrish said he would only do so if absolutely necessary and would call a board meeting for important decisions of possible.
