Another press release from the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. They are working hard to get people down to the beach.
Favorable winds and steering currents are expected to keep any oil-related impacts well away from Franklin County beaches and shores through at least the next 72 hours.
Visitors are reminded that Franklin County beaches and other area attractions remain open for public enjoyment.
NOAA computer models predict that a leading edge of the spill may soon be picked up in the loop current and carried in a southerly direction away from North Florida’s shoreline. The loop current is an area of warm water that comes up from the Caribbean, past the Yucatan Peninsula, and into the Gulf of Mexico. The current is also known as the Florida current as it flows through the Florida Strait and then into the Gulf Stream as it heads north to the east coast of the U.S. Watch the Florida Division of Emergency Management daily update at www.floridadisaster.org/index.asp Additional details and trajectory maps can be found at www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com
Florida Fish and Wildlife officials report the state’s recreational and commercial fisheries have not been affected by the oil spill. Fishing continues to be open in the vast majority of Gulf of Mexico waters, and all related saltwater fishing regulations remain in effect. Details can be found at www.myfwc.com/OilSpill
The boundaries of the Federal waters which are closed to fishing were extended today however. Effective 6 pm EDT, NOAA extended the boundaries of the federal closed fishing area in the Gulf of Mexico as a precautionary measure to ensure that seafood from the Gulf will remain safe for consumers. The newly closed area is more than 150 miles from the nearest port and primarily in deep water used by pelagic longline fisheries that target highly migratory species, such as tuna and swordfish. Coastal fisheries, such as grouper, snapper and shrimp, will not be affected by the expansion of the closed area. Details can be found at http://sero.nmfs.noaa.gov/.
