A press release from the Franklin County Emergency Management Office

APALACHICOLA--A memorandum was received May 19, 2010, from John Cherry III of the Florida Division of Emergency Management stating that the FLORIDA KEY TAR BALLS ARE NOT RELATED TO THE DEEPWATER HORIZON OIL SPILL. Tar balls were found on the beach Monday at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and Smathers Beach in Key West. Other tar balls were found Tuesday on the beach at Big Pine Key and Loggerhead Key in the Dry Tortugas National Park. These were analyzed by the Coast Guard Marine Safety Laboratory in New London, Conn. All beaches in Florida remain open.

The Boom Contingency plan for Franklin County has been approved by the Boom Cell of DEP and is in the second stage, which is the review stage.
