NOAA foresees extremely active hurricane season

NOAA forecasters say an active to extremely active Atlantic hurricane season is most likely this year.

In its initial outlook for the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1st through November 30th, the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center calls for a 70 percent probability of having 14 to 23 named storms this season, of which 8 to 14 could become hurricanes, including 3 to 7 major hurricanes of Category 3, 4 or 5.

An average season is 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

NOAA says that a number of factors lead them to believe this will be an active season including upper atmospheric winds which are highly conducive for storms and Warm Atlantic Ocean water which help storms develop and move across the Atlantic.
