Franklin County increases speeding fines

You may want to think twice before speeding in Franklin County because speeding tickets are about to cost a little more.

The county commission on Tuesday approved an ordinance that doubles the fee the county collects from speeding tickets and other traffic infractions from 15 dollars to 30 dollars.

The money the county collects from speeding fines helps fund courthouse maintenance and security equipment like metal detectors.

The fees at their current level raise about 27000 dollars a year; that will likely double once the higher fees take effect.

The vote to increase the fees was approved 4 to 1.

District 1 commissioner Pinki Jackel voted against the increase because she said it did not lower ad valorem portion of the county budget so she saw no reason to increase the fee.

She said that just because the state government said the county can raise the fee is not a good enough reason to actually do it.

Franklin County was the last county in the judicial circuit to increase the courthouse facility fees.
