Nearly 15 thousand Florida charities face losing tax-exempt status

The IRS has just released a list of nearly 15 thousand Florida charities, including about 9 in Franklin County, that are facing the loss of their tax exempt status.
The IRS says the groups need to file tax returns by October the 15th to avoid losing their tax-exempt status.
The list includes organizations that have not filed returns for the last three years, and many of the organizations on the list are small, community-based organizations, including many service clubs, foundations and school-based groups.
Some of the groups may no longer be active and the IRS will automatically revoke the tax-exempt status of charities that do not file a return by October 15th.
Others may simply not know about a change in the law in 2007 that requires them to file a return.
Some of the Franklin County groups that are on the list include KEEP FRANKLIN COUNTY BEAUTIFUL, The ST GEORGE ISLAND YACHT CLUB, The WILLOUGHBY MARKS AMERICAN LEGION POST 0106 and the CARRABELLE LIGHTHOUSE ASSOCIATION.
